Acupuncture is an approach to health and wellbeing that originated in China more than 5,000 years ago.

It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy, called qi (pronounced chi) that circulates along twelve invisible energy lines in the body, known as meridians. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system.

Along each meridian are numerous acupuncture points, which correlate to different physical and emotional aspects. When there is a block or imbalance of qi at these points, pain, illness or emotional disorders can arise.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles at specific points and to various depths in order to clear blocks and restore balance the body’s energy flow.

The intent is to reduce what is excessive, increase what is deficient, warm what is cold, cool what is hot, circulate what is stagnant, move what is congealed, stabilise what is reckless, raise what is falling and lower what is rising.

At Embrace Health, after your initial consultation with Dr Billie, you’ll lie on the table either face down or face up. Often, you keep all your clothes on depending where the needles need to go.

Dr Billie uses extreme sensitivity and is highly observant in determining exactly which points to use and how. It is a very demanding yet very delicate task in which she is able to bring about sublime yet noticeable and at times even dramatic changes in your energy level, healing and outlook on life.

As the needles are inserted, you may feel nothing or it may feel sore depending on how blocked the point is. The needle will never feel sharp or hurt like dry needling or an injection.

On average, the needles stay in for about 30 minutes. During this time you are encouraged to relax, meditate or doze.
